Eggs in Space finally submitted!

At long last we’ve sent Eggs in Space to the folks at Apple and now we’re waiting to find out if our baby gets approved. That would be quite a Christmas present for us so we’ve written to Santa to say we’ve been good Bees.

As you can probably tell we are aiming to get Eggs in Space on sale in time for Christmas, we’ve even included a special Christmas mini-game (the highly originally named ‘Christmas Eggs in Space’) in this first version of our debut game. There has been a whole lot of tweaking of the gameplay these last few weeks and we’ve tried our damndest to get it playing smoothly on the 3G. Other more well-endowed iPhones have never been an issue, but John has worked wonders on tidying up the code and we’ve even included a simple version of the game for those, like myself, who still carry our trusty older machines in our pocket.

It’s a bit of a mystery what the procedure is for getting your app approved, so we’ve read a few bits and pieces on the topic, but really we need to do it for ourselves. The game runs as well as most of the apps we’ve come across and our testing seems to have ironed out all bugs, so fingers, toes and all other wiggly bits will be crossed that it all goes smoothly. It will be quite a thrill to see Eggs in Space in amongst all the other releases, but we’re proud we’ve even got this far. It’s been less than six months before we decided to develop games and here we are on the verge of releasing something into the wild.

Mario ages better than me

Super Mario looking good after 25 years So Mario is 25 years old and has never looked in finer health. While we mortals all lose our verve with age, ongoing video game characters are blessed with numerous refreshes, rehashes and all the latest mod-cons. While I’m feeling decidedly 8 bit these days, Mario has never looked better and is resplendent in 3D. For my money the Mario Galaxy games are the plumber’s greatest adventures yet, but what do I know, I never had an N64 or a Gamecube.

As Sonic the Hedgehog passes n-n-n-nineteen years of age and even Lara Croft has been with us for nearly 15 years, I’m starting to wonder if we should have more game characters that age along with us, the players? Ms Croft may only inhabit memory chips, but maybe she would need a spot of silicon to keep her fabulous figure after a decade or two of jumping around? Or maybe Sonic could slow down his manic pace and go for a blue rinse as he gets into his dotage while Mario’s belly could continue to grow as he ditches the Mediterranean diet and eats a few more pizzas (with extra mushrooms of course) than he should? After all, he deserves it.

After 50 years service we could give these characters a gold clock and they could go off to enjoy their retirement where there will be no more evil doctors, ghouls, ghosts or hideous fiery traps tormenting them. I can see it now – “Not-so-super Mario” will certainly make us feel a whole lot better about our creaking old bodies. James Bond or Sherlock Holmes have reversed the aging process on the silver screen, but it would make a pleasant change to see a protagonist in a video game get older, wiser and more wrinkled as time passes.

Perhaps there are some characters that have aged, either within one game or across multiple titles, but I struggle to think of them. Maybe you know better?

Dear Santa, we like these E3 games…

Here are a few of the E3 games that caught our eye and made us want to catch a bus into the near future so we could writhe around in a bath full of these splendid-looking titles…

Kirby’s Epic Yarn (Nintendo) – Wii

Forgotten Nintendo hero goes all wooly and Little Big Planet on us, which isn’t a bad thing. Perfect Wii material after all the recent Mario brilliance, check the above photo for all it’s fluffy splendour.

Child of Eden (Ubisoft) – PS3/Xbox

It’s basically Rez pt 2, which sounds good to us. If you don’t like colours or sounds you’ll hate Child of Eden. Reach for the lasers – literally if you play it on Microsoft’s Kinect.

Gran Turismo 5 (SCEE) – PS3

The game that is never finished revealed it’s latest feature – a release date! These days we have Forza, various Need for Speeds and all sorts of nerdy sims like iRacing, so Sony needs to deliver this November.

Sonic 4 (Sega) – iPhone

At last – a proper sideways scrolling Sonic sequel – and it’s on the iPhone! If you are a Sonic addict like ourselves this is great news, the port’s weren’t bad, but this is something new without being radically new.

Little Big Planet 2 (SCEE) – PS3

If this isn’t the best game ever then we’ll know who to blame… you! After all, it’s you who will become game designer in what is more than a platform game – it’s a ‘platform for games’.

Comic Jumper (Twisted Pixel) – XBLA

This side-scrolling hero-em-up looks fun and funny – a rare thing in the po-faced world of video gaming. Available to download on XBLA soon.

Kung Fu Rider (SCEA) – PS3

You’re a cop in Hong Kong. You ride around the streets on office furniture. You kick people as you go past. You sing “I’m a kung fu rider” an awful lot. You shake you new PS3 wavy-sticks in delight.

Limbo (Playdead) – XBLA

An indie gem set in a black and white world of meloncholy and wonder. This looks a great deal classier than most puzzlers; it’s moody, magnificent and all in monochrome. Limbo is Game Noir.

Predators (Chillingo) – iPhone

From the chaps that brought you Guerrilla Bob comes a new Predator game, one of many movie tie-ins revealed for the iPhone of late. It plays like Guerrilla Bob and looks like the Predator movies, which makes it pick of the bunch.

Star Wars: The Old Republic (Lucasarts) – PC

So Star Wars is getting round to churning out an online MMOOOOOORRRRRPPPPGGGG (or whatever the abbreviation is) and The Old Republic is it. First revealed an age ago, this geek’s paradise is with us soon.

Space Invaders HD (Taito) – iPad

It’s 2010 and Space Invaders is still an essential. This version is in the ‘table-top’ format. Yep, you pop your iPad on the table and voila – it’s like the old Space Invaders table that you very slightly, vaguely remember from your youth.
